I won't post pictures of the new train sets due to the fact that the LEGO group has not yet officially released information about them. However, that hasn't stopped others sites from doing so, most notably, Brickopedia.

My curiosity has been thoroughly piqued by the new sets and speculation from leaked box art seems to indicate that they have it all: motor, rechargeable battery box, IR receiver, and a remote control.

But wait.... The box art clearly states 'Batteries not included'. What? This can only mean that the battery box included in the set is made to look like the rechargeable battery box from LEGO. This is good news for those that may have complained about the steep price of the rechargeable version. I hope they decide to sell it separately.

Although the boxes are quite large, it's possible to use the older square battery boxes with PF. There was a recent brickjournal article on modifying the PF connector to make this possible.

I'd like to convert to just use a standard 9V battery (the square kind). I know it wouldn't last very long, but it would make building things a whole lot easier.

One thing to keep in mind about 9V is that you need 6 AA, AAA, C, or even D batteries (all 1.5v), so even with 6AAA batteries, I don't think you get a box as small as the one in the picture. I hope I'm wrong, though, a square PF battery box would be great.

    Hello.

    Here is my work.

I'd like, 9V battery with battery box PowerFunction.

If it is compact and inexpensive.
Also, you can use a commercially available 9V rechargeable battery.

I think is good if it is not necessary modifications to such nonsense....

What colour though, Dan? That option came up when we were working out an optimim size but the colour issue is a pain. As irritating as the size of the battery box may be it's basically the most versatile shape (at least that HoMa, Steve B., others and I could come up with) that's big enough to fit the tech. I've built six-wide long-nosers before for which it's definitely not optimal but it can be used with stickers and/or cladding.

I believe that black would be be the most universal color. A lot of locomotives have black running gear and underframe to minimise the look of road grime. Here in North America, major exceptions to this rule are BNSF (including its predecessor Santa Fe) and Union Pacific. Another interesting option would be to make the battery pack with a row of studs on each side so that tiles of the desired color could be used.

Very interesting. It had not occurred to me that it could mean for the remote! If the price point is right, then including the rechargeable battery would a great addition.

    Hi Jeramy,

As others have said on other forums, the "Batteries not included" might just refer to the batteries required for the remote control. We'll just have to wait and see...

Personnally, I'd prefer a rechargable battery shaped like the fuel tank of a large diesel-electric locomotive. It would be easy to "hide" and easy to replace.
